History

This originial Windmill homestead on Oliviershoek Pass - - was built in 1936 by Otto Zunckel. Otto was part of the Berlin Missionary Society arriving in Africa in the 1850, to built the Emmaus Mission Station / Hospital.

Our staff compliment originate from the Amazizi tribe down in the foothills of the Northern Drakensberg. The Drakensberg was once inhabited by the San people, also known as Bushmen. They have left us a legacy of their paintings on the sandstone cliffs and cave walls, depicting their way of life and the various animals and people they encountered. In due course, the Amazizi, a tribe of the Nguni race arrived, and occupied the river valleys and approaches to the Drakensberg mountains.

- The main residence of this lodge looked very comfortable and cosy, however the self catering chalets were misrepresented. There was hardly a kitchen at all, the room was not very spacious and we froze that night even though we wore track-suits to bed and bought our own duvet! We ended up leaving a day early and seeking alternative accomodation because we couldn't deal with the cold. Food was excellent, but i do recommend that you stay in the Guest House and not the Self Catering Accomodation, and you will have a pleasurable stay.

- stayed in windmill bungalows, top notch! only hoping the blonde receptionist/barlady is not permanent staff. very short in manners and short on friendliness. also did not think you had any sweeterner for coffee. that's it, no 'let me find some for you' great meals were enjoyed by both of us. will be back as the price suited our pensioners pockets!
